Príslovky spôsobu

Adverbs of manner tell us how something happens. They are usually placed either after the main verb or after the object.

Príslovky spôsobu nám hovoria, ako sa niečo deje. Zvyčajne sú umiestnené buď po hlavnom slovese, alebo po predmete.

Príklady

He swims well.
He ran quickly.
She spoke softly.
James coughed loudly to attract her attention.
He plays the flute beautifully. (po priamom predmete)
He ate the chocolate cake greedily. (po priamom predmete)

Príslovka spôsobu nemôže byť umiestnená medzi slovesom a jeho priamym predmetom. Príslovka musí byť umiestnená buď pred slovesom, alebo na konci vedľajšej vety.

Príklady

He ate greedily the chocolate cake. [nesprávne]
He ate the chocolate cake greedily. [správne]
He greedily ate the chocolate cake. [správne]
He gave us generously the money. [nesprávne]
He gave us the money generously. [správne]
He generously gave us the money. [správne]

Ak sa pred predmetom slovesa nachádza predložka, príslovku spôsobu môžete umiestniť buď pred predložku, alebo za predmet.

Príklady

The child ran happily towards his mother.
The child ran towards his mother happily.

Príslovky spôsobu by sa vždy mali umiestňovať hneď za slovesom, ktoré nemá žiadny predmet (neprechodné slovesá).

The town grew quickly after 1997.
He waited patiently for his mother to arrive.

Tieto bežné príslovky spôsobu sú takmer vždy umiestnené priamo pred slovesom: well, badly, hard, & fast

He swam well despite being tired.
The rain fell hard during the storm.

Pozícia príslovky je dôležitá , keď sa vo vete nachádza viac ako jedno sloveso. Ak sa príslovka nachádza pred alebo za hlavným slovesom, modifikuje len toto sloveso. Ak sa príslovka umiestni za vedľajšiu vetu, potom modifikuje celú činnosť opísanú vedľajšou vetou. Všimnite si rozdiel vo význame medzi nasledujúcimi vetami.
