Funkcie budúceho času jednoduchého

Budúci čas jednoduchý odkazuje na "čas neskôr ako teraz" a vyjadruje isté fakty. V tomto prípade neexistuje žiadny 'postoj'.

Budúci čas jednoduchý sa používa na:

• Predpovedanie budúcej udalosti:
  It will rain tomorrow.
• S "I" alebo "we" na vyjadrenie spontánneho rozhodnutia:
  I'll pay for the tickets by credit card.
• Vyjadrenie ochoty:
  I'll do the washing-up.
  He'll carry your bag for you.
• V zápornom tvare na vyjadrenie neochoty:
  The baby won't eat his soup.
  I won't leave until I've seen the manager!
• S "I" v opytovacom tvare použitím "shall" na vyslovenie ponuky:
  Shall I open the window?
• S "we" v opytovacom tvare použitím "shall" na vyslovenie návrhu:
  Shall we go to the cinema tonight?
• S "I" v opytovacom tvare použitím "shall" na žiadosť o radu alebo pokyn:
  What shall I tell the boss about this money?
• S použitím "you" na vydanie príkazov:
  You will do exactly as I say.
• S "you" v opytovacom tvare ako pozvanie:
  Will you come to the dance with me?
  Will you marry me?

Poznámky: v modernej angličtine sa will uprednostňuje pred shall. Shall sa používa prevažne s I a we na vyslovenie ponuky alebo návrhu, alebo v žiadosti o radu (viď. príklady nižšie). Spolu s inými osobami (you, he, she, they) sa shall používa len v literárnom alebo básnickom prostredí, napr. "With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, She shall have music wherever she goes."

*Shall je zastarané, ale ešte stále sa v niektorých situáciách bežne používa namiesto "will" v kladných alebo opytovacích tvaroch (viď. príklady vyššie).
